Effective Time Management With Time Mapping

Even though there are numerous manuals and pieces of advice on effective time management, it is still a massive problem for a lot of people. This troubles freelancers and remote workers too, who work from home to a significant extent. There are various challenges and obstacles to such work but effective time management skills are one of them.

Time mapping acts as a great tool for efficient time management. Yet it is usually overlooked for time tracking, though it has nothing to do with time tracking. However, time tracking can be considered as part of time mapping, if employed correctly.

So what exactly is time to map all about? It’s a map of your jobs, either related to work or your personal life; with the difference of time blocks. Time mapping can be remarkably helpful in planning time for emails, phone calls, meetings, amongst numerous other features of work which need to be completed.

How to Use Time Mapping?

We all have different priorities, and everyone can map his or her time in different ways. Either you’re a Project Manager or an individual, it all works differently for everyone. Time mapping is a well-structured system yet you don’t have to follow it strictly, it’s the map of the time. And if you are in a new area; you never follow a map in with accuracy to a mile. It’s the same thing with time mapping.

Furthermore, you can deal with time mapping as an exercise and not as a program which will command your every next step. For a start, you can take a piece of paper, a pen, and mixed colors of highlighters. To produce a time map you have to start by listing your jobs, all of them. Those you do at work, as well as those you do at home. Then you should group them into various categories such as work, private life, the most critical tasks, and the least relevant ones. While generating a time map, it’s necessary to ask yourself the following questions:

  • How am I spending my time?
  • Am I spending it the right way?
  • What would I like to change in my workday?
  • How would you like your day to be like?
  • Is there any special task you should pay more consideration to?

Once you are done with your time map, check how it works with your workday, make adjustments. The more you work with it, the better it works. You can look at its flaws; how much time you spend on singular activities, whether the blocks of time regulate with your time map. Moreover, you can create monthly and weekly time mapping template and fill it according to your own requirements.

The tactics of time mapping benefits to reshape the working day and found a schedule in which you’ve time to perform all your tasks but also to spend time with the loved ones, or with yourself. It’s an excellent tool for companies as all workers can work on their teamwork.

Don’t forget to help yourself with specific software used in time management; such as time tracking software (which will help you calculate time spent on all activities), to-do lists, calendars, etc. Design your own time map to always stay on top of your work!
